Welcome to

Drop City

Books!

We’re your friendly, independent, radical, bookshop, located in the centre of the known universe – Hanley, Stoke-on-Trent.

Why are we here?

BECAUSE PEOPLE NEED BOOKS!

Now more than ever, books matter.

They are our first line of defence in the fight to reclaim our attention spans, protect human creativity and they’re a chance to get deeper and think harder when the world rewards the fast and the shallow. We need more ideas, more perspectives, more courage more empathy, more kindness and we can find it between the pages.

We want you to fall in love with reading, we don’t just want you to buy books we want you to read ‘em! We want to make picking up your paperback more persuasive than picking up your phone. We want your kids to beg for one more page at bedtime.

How are we going to do that?

Well I’ll tell you.

First, through our books. We carefully curate a selection of titles that covers the weird, the bold, the radical, the new and exciting, the forgotten treasures and the hidden gems. Whether you want to browse for hours or ask us for recommendations, your new favourite book is in our shop.

And finally, through our events. With all the substance of a literary salon and the feel of a Friday night in your mate’s living room, our author events put the Lit back into Literary. We bring world class authors to Stoke, we ask them funny, tough, thought-provoking curious questions about their books, their writing and their lives. We finish with cringe-free Q and A’s where no one says “it’s really more of a comment than a question”.

Next, through our shop. We have thought about every inch of Drop City Books, every plant, every lamp, every decommissioned traffic light (no, really), the soundtrack, the smells, the layout. We build this shop the DCB way, with a lot of love and with all of our best friends. It’s really hard not to leave feeling brighter and more hopeful than when you arrived.

But we don’t stop there, we also host book clubs, story time, performances, writing classes, workshops, reading circles and more. DCB is a place for good conversations and growing communities.

Even if you haven’t picked up a book since school, our events are a good time with good people. Warning: best friendships have been made at our events, so schmooze wisely.
